The Civil Rights Era
In 2011, I began working at The Philadelphia Juvenile Justice center, our population is ever changing as the students are frequently taken into custody and subsequently released. I see 100 students a week or approximately 400 students a month. Fifty five percent of these students are African American, forty five percent Hispanic and five percent Caucasian. The learning needs of my students are as diverse as the students, as is their interests in the arts. The students housed within this population have often had very little exposure to both culture and history. Thus, it is my hope that through this unit they will gain some insight on a time period in American history that helped to shape our nation.
