Could We Learn Peace by Doing a Piece?

This unit uses Philadelphia’s renowned murals to connect two subjects, social studies and fine arts, and it is intended for use in either area. The curriculum, which is geared for 7th through high school, is meant to emphasize peaceful collaboration while teaching the visual art of murals and the social issues surrounding them. The students will use research skills to uncover the facts about Philadelphia’s murals and the history behind them. The final outcome of this unit will be a mural design, to be developed in stages: the discovery, the design and implementation, and a role play community meeting for the final approval of the work.
