Mindfulness Mondays: Bite Size Strategies to Transform Your Classroom
This unit draws upon traditional contemplative practices to carry out, ongoing and easy to implement mindfulness exercises. This unit is intended for high school students but can be adapted for all grades (K-12). This unit also seeks to improve students’ concentration and critical thinking skills and develop social awareness and Habits of Success (HOS). Furthermore, this unit will require the use of a wide range of sensory observations including visual, taste, touch, smell, and sound. Special guest and Mindfulness Apps and other resources could also be incorporated. The 5-10 minutes sample (bite size) lessons in this unit are short mindfulness activities that are meant to be practiced on Mondays, but could be used on any day of the week. This unit can be implemented over the course of the year and serve as opening classroom routines. This unit is content agnostic, but it may fit best during an advisory period or restorative practice sessions. Teachers are encouraged to practice Monday Mindfulness activities alongside of students. Namaste.
