HIV/AIDS: A Touch of Reality for Young Adults

Today’s young people are aware of the problems that can come about with contracting HIV/AIDS. However, they are not honestly aware of the harsh realities of living with the virus. While abstinence is the best answer to preventing the spread of the disease, the reality is that children are engaging the sexual activities and drugs at a much earlier age than they once were. Often times adults simply assume that children know and understand HIV/AIDS. It is not always so. Students will gain a coherent understanding of the disease, how the disease can be contracted, consequences of the disease, and ways to cope with the disease if, unfortunately, someone has contracted it. This unit will cover general information about the virus, the prevalence of the virus in the world vs. in their own backyards, modes of contracting the virus, preventions and treatments of the virus, testing, the effects of the virus on the body, and the effects of the virus on the entire human population.
