One Story, Innumerable Losses: Themes in Genocide
One Story, Innumerable Losses: Themes in Genocide is a unit plan that focuses on close readings of genocide related texts and analysis of the themes shared within them. Students will read excerpts from literary nonfiction and nonfiction texts and view film clips and eyewitness testimonies as they examine several themes: disbelief and inability to face reality, separation from and loss of family, and the role of bystanders. After multiple close readings (or viewings) of each text and intense class discussions, students will synthesize their observations from each set of themed texts through writing and reflecting on questions about human nature, dealing with death, and making choices as an individual. The final part of the unit will ask students to become a witness to history by creating and sharing a personal narrative of a Holocaust survivor.
