Teachers Institute of Philadelphia

The Teachers Institute of Philadelphia (TIP) provides academic professional development seminars to Philadelphia public school teachers at the University of Pennsylvania.

“Learning from Penn professors who are willing and eager to share their expertise is an enriching and edifying experience. These courses offer insights and inspiration for us as we create curricula for students in our content areas. TIP is especially valuable as we push for rigor to meet the Common Core Standards yet seek to keep our students inspired and involved. During these uncertain times for public education, it is a joy to work alongside equally passionate teachers.” -- High school ESOL teacher

Applications for the 2015 program are due on Friday, December 12 at 5pm. TIP seminars are open to K-12 teachers in West and Southwest Philadelphia public schools, with the exception of STEM seminars, which are open to teachers in public schools across the city.

Herman Beavers, Professor of English and Africana Studies

Electronics from Toys to Tools: An Adventure for Future Engineers

Jorge Santiago-Aviles, Associate Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering

Prospective 2015 TIP Fellows are invited to attend this year’s Open House, which will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd at 4:30pm in the Golkin Room (223) of Penn's Houston Hall (3417 Spruce Street). Seminar Leaders will introduce their respective topics.

TIP Fellows to Present Curriculum Units at the Penn Museum

On Wednesday, June 11th, TIP Fellows will present their curriculum units inspired by the Penn Museum's exhibition, Native American Voices: The People – Here and Now, at the Penn Museum! The event is open to the public and will take place at 4pm in the museum's Nevil Classroom, located on the second floor.

The curriculum topics include: Poetry in the Present Tense; Understanding Native American Music; Fact versus Fiction: Christopher Columbus and Thanksgiving; Geography of the Lenape Diaspora; Children of the Earth and Sacred Places; and Math through the Eyes of Pueblo Peoples.

Refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
